From Dec. 7 to 9, the 9th Confucius Institute Conference, themed “Look Forward to the Next 10 Years of Confucius Institutes”, was held in Xiamen International Convention Center, with more than 2,200 participants from 126 countries and regions, including some Chinese ambassadors, university presidents, deans of Confucius institutes, officials from principal or municipal education commissions, and representatives from Chinese enterprises locating in foreign countries. On invitation, TUTE’s Vice President Yan Bing, Dr. Ademasu Tsegaye, President of Addis Ababa University, two Chinese deans of TUTE’s Confucius institutes, and other related members from International Exchange Office attended the conference.
Ms. Liu Yandong, Vice Premier of the State Council and President of the Council of the Confucius Institute Headquarters, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech. She mentioned that since the establishment of the first Confucius institute, in ten years, all the Confucius institutes have been serving as a bridge to promote the cultural exchanges between different countries. She also expressed her expectation for the institutes to achieve more with sustainable development.
28 forums were held with 186 speeches delivered. Dr. Kebede, Foreign Presidents of Confucius Institute at Addis Ababa University, and Dr. Adriano Su, President of Addis Ababa University introduced on education cooperation features and experience with TUTE in their speeches and expressed their willingness for future cooperation with TUTE in vocational education, Chinese language teaching, African research and other fields.
So far, China has established 475 Confucius institutes, 851 Confucius classes in 126 countries and regions with 3.45 million registered students. As a result, 61 countries and EU have integrated Chinese language teaching into their national education systems. There are more than 100 million Chinese language learners across the world. Compared with 10 years ago, the number of Chinese language learners increased by 3.3 times.
