On Dec. 29, 2014, local time, the inauguration ceremony of the 2nd Confucius institute at Addis Ababa University was held with participants including Mr. Xie Xiaoyan, Chinese ambassador in Ethiopia, Dr. Adriano Su, President of Addis Ababa University, and Pro. Yan Bing, Vice President of TUTE, representatives from Ethiopian Ministry of Education and Chinese enterprises in Ethiopia, and teachers and students of the Confucius institute.
In his speech, Mr. Xie Xiaoyan mentioned that the establishment of the Confucius institute at Addis Ababa University turned a new page for the cooperation and exchange between China and Ethiopia.
Dr. Adriano Su noted that the friendship between China and Ethiopia had a long history and China had been committed to helping Ethiopian economic development. The establishment of the institute would satisfy the needs of Ethiopian youth to learn Chinese language and culture.
Pro. Yan Bin said that the establishment of the institute signals further education cooperation between the two universities and it was another achievement made by TUTE, Ethiopian Ministry of Education and the university. TUTE would continue to work hard with Addis Ababa University to achieve more.
In the letter of congratulation from Ms. Xu Lin, Director of NOCFL and Director-general of Confucius institute headquarters, the two countries share a long-history friendship and the education exchange started in 1970s with a group of Ethiopian youth studying in China. The establishment of the institute at Addis Ababa University will help to promote the friendship and cooperation between the two countries.
After the ceremony, the students of the Confucius institute performed various programs, including costume show, folk dances, songs, and martial arts, etc., which impressed the audience.
In recent years, great progress has been made in Chinese language teaching in Ethiopia. Since the establishment of the first Confucius institute by TUTE in Ethiopia, in the following 4 years, in all, 2 Confucius institutes and 4 Confucius classes were established, which provides a good platform for Ethiopian people to learn Chinese language and culture.
